Book Review “Sprouts: The Miracle Food” by Steve Meyerowitz

When I first started sprouting, I bought lots of books to read on the subject. I do this with every new thing I do or revisit. It makes me feel like I have a better chance at success (whether that is true or not)
One of the books I bought was Sprouts: The Miracle Food by Steve Meyerowitz who is a big name in the Sprouting world. Back in the 1970′s he was nicknamed “Sproutman”, and still has a thriving business, a book and a website with seeds and his own sprouting products. Now that I’ve been sprouting for some time, I revisited this book with a fresh outlook.

Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream

Goat Milk Yogurt

I have been wanting to make goat milk yogurt for a while now. The process is exactly the same for cow milk yogurt, but due the lower fat content it does not thicken up as much as cow milk yogurt. I use powered milk to thicken mine up to the consistency I like, but you could use powered goat milk if you are making this due to an intolerance of cow milk. Or you can skip the powdered milks altogether and drink it like a keifer.

November Homestead Challenge

This month is all about apples! This time of year, apples are fresh and at their best, and they are amazingly versatile and delicious. If you chose to accept the challenge, Homestead Anywhere challenges you buy 20-40 pounds of apples and see how many different products you can make from them. Extra credit if you can get apples from your own trees, a neighbors or a u-pick farm. Your local farmer’s market or grocer are also great places to get apples, and you may even gets “seconds” for a good price. If you’ve never purchased this many apples at one time, a good deal is $0.50/lb (we spent between $0.35-$1.99 per pound for an average of $0.50/lb).

Canned Apple Juice (No sugar added)

Of course having an apple press is the way to go when making homemade apple juice. But how many of us have an apple press lying around? Not me! So this is made with a vegetable juicer and a large straining bag (for pressing the juiced pulp). If you don’t have a juicer, there is an alternative method in the tips below.

Canned Apples in Light Syrup

It’s apple season! I love this time of year. Apples are my favorite fruit and there are just so many things things you can do with them. A lot of people like to make pie filling and can that, but I prefer to just can apple slices in a light syrup. That way I have a lot of room for creativity later in the non-apple season. I can transform the simple apple wedges into a pie or a crisp or a quick batch of applesauce, or an apple syrup for ice cream or pancakes, etc, etc. etc.
