It has been a big relief to have some homemade cough syrup remedies on hand for colds and lingering coughs after a cold. There are three different cough syrup recipes to choose from based on what ingredients you have and a “cough ease tea”. These are adult formulas, so check with your doctor before giving these to children.

Adult Cough Syrup Recipes

Cough Syrup (version 1)

1/4 tsp. each cayenne and ground ginger
1 Tb. each honey and cider vinegar
2 Tb. water

Mix and take by the teaspoon (or two) throughout the day. Make this small recipe as needed (Don’t multiply and make a larger amount ¬†as cayenne intensifies as it sits.)

Cough Syrup (version 2)

1/2 C. honey, slightly heated if needed
1/4 C. apple cider vinegar

Mix and take 1 Tb. during a coughing fit.

Cough Syrup (version 3)

1 C. honey, slightly heated if needed
1/4 C. brandy
1 Tb. lemon juice.

Mix and take 1 Tb. during a coughing fit.

Cough Ease Tea

2 tsp. dry thyme or 2 Tb. fresh thyme
1 C. boiling water

Cover and steep 4 minutes. Drink several cups throughout day.
